FinOps Maturity Self-Check

Rate where your organization sits today on each FinOps Framework Domain, using the Crawl / Walk / Run maturity model. This is a self-check, not an audit — nothing here is derived from your Azure data, and your answers are stored only in this deployment's own database.

Progress

Counts how many of the four FinOps Domains have a saved rating; completion is not a maturity score.
4 of 4 rated
Why this matters

A Domain left unrated isn't a zero — it's simply unknown. Rate all four before trusting the Overall weakest-link stage below.

4 of 4 FinOps Framework Domains rated.

Stage by domain

Maps each rated Domain to its numeric Crawl(0)/Walk(1)/Run(2) self-rating; an unrated Domain has no bar.
4 of 4 rated
Why this matters

The lowest bar is your weakest Domain and the one the Overall stage below is anchored to — check the Action plan for a concrete next step there.

Overall stage progression

Plots the weakest-link Overall stage from every saved snapshot where all 4 Domains were rated; snapshots missing a Domain aren't plotted.
2 saved snapshot(s) with all 4 Domains rated
Why this matters

A flat or declining line means practice hasn't matured since the last complete rating — treat a new snapshot as a periodic check-in, not a one-time exercise.

Rate your Domains

Pick the stage that best matches current practice for each of the four FinOps Framework Domains, then save one snapshot of all four ratings plus optional notes.
Why this matters

Rate honestly against current practice, not an aspiration — the Action plan below only gives useful next steps if the starting point is accurate.

Builds a better understanding of an organization's cloud usage and cost drivers.

Connects cloud spend to the business value it delivers — forecasting, budgeting, and unit economics.

Takes action to reduce waste and improve efficiency of cloud usage and cost.

Establishes and operates the organizational structure, governance, and tooling that make FinOps work.

Overall

Reports the least mature of the four rated Domains (a weakest-link rule) — a strong rating in one Domain never offsets a weak rating in another.
Why this matters

A weakest-link result can look worse than the average of your ratings — that's deliberate. A single materially weak Domain (e.g. no cost accountability process) can undermine value even where other Domains are strong.

Weakest-link overall stage: Walk — The capability is understood and generally followed, with most automation and processes in place, though some edge cases remain unaddressed.

Action plan

One concrete next step per rated Domain, based on the FinOps Framework's own published guidance for progressing between Crawl, Walk, and Run — not a generic recommendation from a numeric stage alone.
Why this matters

Work through the listed Domains roughly in order of lowest current stage first — a Domain still at Crawl usually has more available near-term progress than one already at Walk.

  • Understand Usage & Cost (Run) — Keep your unified, near-real-time reporting and anomaly-detection loop current as new cost sources or teams come online — sustaining this is the work at this stage, not adding new mechanics.
  • Quantify Business Value (Walk) — Automate the data flow between forecasting, budgeting, and your accounting system; set live spend-vs-budget thresholds that trigger a defined response as you approach them; and extend unit-economics metrics across more of the business so cost-per-customer/cost-to-serve figures are trusted, not back-of-envelope.
  • Optimize Usage & Cost (Walk) — Automate architecture and policy decisions through infrastructure-as-code and policy-as-code, move commitment-discount purchasing onto an automated cadence driven by utilization KPIs, and broaden automated detection of idle resources and rightsizing opportunities beyond your most obvious cost centers.
  • Manage the FinOps Practice (Walk) — Fund and scale a dedicated FinOps team with a comprehensive documented decision model, automate compliance monitoring and embed policy directly into your build/deploy tooling, and make FinOps training mandatory and role-specific across the organization rather than optional.

Domain vs Capability rollup

Compares each Domain's own self-rating (the form above) against its rolled-up stage from the Capability Assessment tab's per-Capability ratings — the weakest Capability in a Domain sets that Domain's rollup, same weakest-link rule as the Overall stage.
0 of 4 Domains have a Capability rollup
Why this matters

These are two separate, independently-saved self-checks, not one merged record — a mismatch usually means the Capability wizard has more (or less) detail rated for that Domain than the quick Domain-level form captured. Use the link to go rate the Capabilities behind a Domain's rollup.
